This mutant village grows year on year and adapts to patterns of visitor use, making it difficult to predict what Transfert will look like when the first residents move into the designated development zone (ZAC). The schedule of concerts, shows, workshops and games is consciously eclectic so that there is something for everyone and it acts as a social hub.
By bringing together the local authority, non-profit associations, private business and creative artists, Transfert fosters closer dialogue between culture and urban development. This offers ways for “why not” and “laisser faire” approaches to co-exist.
For five years, Transfert has been a space for living and exploring future urban design projects. It is a true observatory, and a tool for researchers, urban planners, sociologists and artists with a spirit of openness and curiosity. By bringing its unique element of irrationality and by stimulating creativity in the local area, the project aims to show that culture and cooperation offer fertile new ground for thinking the communal spaces of the future.
Ultimately, in 2032, a new district will be built here as part of the major Pirmil – Les Isles urban renewal project. Perhaps it will bear the traces of this experiment.
The site
Transfert is a peculiar village in the middle of a barren brownfield site. Here, street performances, concerts, the visual arts, pétanque tournaments, and various workshops all co-exist happily side by side. Transfert is a temporary public space which brings together the arts, enjoyment and people.
